Community Medicine or Preventive & Social Medicine (PSM) is the science of preventing diseases, prolonging life and promoting physical & mental health and efficiency.
The subject is introduced to the medical undergraduates from Ist MBBS itself with an aim to sensitize them to the community. Visits to places of public health importance are organized during the 1st year. During the second year, the topics of Environmental Sanitation and Biostatistics / Health Statistics are introduced. As part of practical training, the students undergo monthly rotatory postings to Urban health Centre (UHC) and Rural Health Centre (RHTC) during which they conduct house to house surveys, family case studies, school health surveys, dietary surveys, etc. During their final year students are taught Epidemiology, Communicable & Non communicable diseases and Community Health including Health Care Delivery, Primary Health Care, Nutrition, Maternal & Child Health, Sociology, Family Planning & Demography, Occupational Health and International Health.

Labs: The Practical laboratory has all the necessary facilities including 4 compound microscopes and 30 dissecting microscopes. Entomology & Helminthology slides, specimens, models and charts are also available as per MCI norms.
The Research Laboratory has all basic facilities for conducting research.
Two Demonstration rooms (75 capacity each) are available with A-V aids like LCD projector. Television and DVD facility is also available.
Material: - The Dept. also has a library with 191 books and over 90 journals. Audiovisual facilities including 4 OHPs, 1 Slide projector, 1 LCD projector, 1 laptop , video cassettes, CD’s & slides are available. The museum is well developed with over 200 charts arranged topic wise, 91 specimens, 60 slides, 31 photographs and 31 models. This entire educational material is also available in the form of 10 manual catalogues

Field Practice Areas :- URBAN & RURAL HEALTH TRAINING CENTRES
The dept. has a Urban Health Centre, 3kms. away from CPR Hospital at Rajarampuri and a Rural Health Training Centre 11kms. away at Khupire (Tal. Karveer) where MCH services including immunization, under fives clinic, F.P., ANC case, PNC care, home visits and surveys are carried out. Students are posted in these field settings in IIIrd and IVth semesters respectively in batches of 35-40. The centres provide Health education and referral services.
As part of Practical training, visits are arranged to the UHC, RHTC and other places of public health importance. Some of these places include:
Visit to our own CPR hospital and its various departments esp. Record section, Blood bank, ART centre, CSSD and Mortuary is also arranged for the students so that they become familiar with the hospital setup.
Clinics: The ARV Clinic (Dog-bite OPD) of the hospital is under the department of Community Medicine.
The ARV OPD timings are from 9.00 am to 1.00 pm on all working days
The annual OPD ranges form 2500-3000 patients
