The department of Forensic medicine and toxicology has the state of art facility for teaching this branch of medicine that helps in determining the cause of death.
Department conducts undergraduate teaching of MBBS students , Bsc in Paramedical technology and orientation of intern posted in department.
The department works closely with the police and magistrates in various Medicolegal cases and autopsy examinations.
Mission-
To produce competent medical professionals who are passionate, sincere and guided by ethics having in them a strong urge to serve humanity. To train the MBBS students to handle the MLC cases with skill and enable them to draw conclusions from autopsy work, treating poisoning cases and managing clinical forensic medicine task.
Vision-
To provide leadership in medical education, research and contribute to human and ethical medico-legal service.
To be recognized as excellence in medico-legal education and to deliver next generation forensic medicine services to the society.
To provide integrated training programs to the doctors, police, judicial officers and scientists.
Function & objectives-
As an important part of RCSM Government Medical College Kolhapur, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology department conducted round the clock medico-legal work which includes postmortem examination, giving technical and expert advice in ante-mortem medico-legal work such as injury certification, drunkenness certificate, age estimation and examination of victim and accused of sexual assault cases. In this way department helps in aiding the investigating, legal and judiciary system in administration of justice.

1) Round the clock postmortem examination done at autopsy room.
2) Department provides cold storage facility of capacity 12 bodies for preservation of unclaimed and outside dead bodies.
3) It is NHRC recognized center for conducting autopsies related to violation of Human right cases for Kolhapur, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
4) The department issues computerized PM reports to the police.
5) Valuable opinions are delivered for Police authorities and timely guidance to Medical Officers from health service whenever asked for.
