The Department of Microbiology, Rajarshee Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Govt. Medical College, Kolhapur, was founded in 2000. The department, which is currently located in the Shenda park building, has over the years witnessed seminal progress.

It is one of the important service department amongst second year M.B.B.S. curriculum which provides Laboratory support to the hospitalized as well as OPD patients.

The department is actively involved in teaching and providing clinical diagnostic services to Chhatrapati Pramila Raje (CPR) Hospital, Rural Hospitals and adjoining health care systems in the District.

  • The Hospital Infection control committee is lead by the Department of Microbiology with the Professor & Head as its Secretary.

  • The Department of Microbiology in coordination with all the clinical departments does the processing & testing of all the necessary & advanced tests.

As an important part of RCSM Government Medical College Kolhapur, Forensic Medicine & Toxicology department conducted round the clock medico-legal work which includes postmortem examination, giving technical and expert advice in ante-mortem medico-legal work such as injury certification, drunkenness certificate, age estimation and examination of victim and accused of sexual assault cases. In this way department helps in aiding the investigating, legal and judiciary system in administration of justice.

Department also conducted undergraduate teaching of MBBS students, and orientation of intern posted in department.

Departments \ Para Clinical Department \ Preventive & Social Medicine \ Introduction

Community Medicine or Preventive & Social Medicine (PSM) is the science of preventing diseases, prolonging life and promoting physical & mental health and efficiency.

The subject is introduced to the medical undergraduates from Ist MBBS itself with an aim to sensitize them to the community. Visits to places of public health importance are organized during the 1st year. During the second year, the topics of Environmental Sanitation and Biostatistics / Health Statistics are introduced. As part of practical training, the students undergo monthly rotatory postings to Urban health Centre (UHC) and Rural Health Centre (RHTC) during which they conduct house to house surveys, family case studies, school health surveys, dietary surveys, etc. During their final year students are taught Epidemiology, Communicable & Non communicable diseases and Community Health including Health Care Delivery, Primary Health Care, Nutrition, Maternal & Child Health, Sociology, Family Planning & Demography, Occupational Health and International Health.

a) Labs:
The practical laboratory has an area of 248.37 Sq. Mts and has all the necessary facilities including 4 compound microscopes and 30 dissecting microscopes. Entomology & Helminthology slides, specimens, models and charts are also available. The Research Laboratory has all basic facilities for conducting research. The Demonstration rooms haveA-V facilities. Television and DVD facility is also available.

b) Machines:
Audiovisual facilities including 4 OHPs, 1 Slide projector, 1 LCD projector, 1 laptop , video cassettes, CD’s & slides are available. The museum is well developed with 215 charts arranged topic wise, 91 specimens, 60 slides, 31 photographs and 31 models. The entire educational material is also available in the form of 10 manual catalogues as well as computer C.D.

c) Special services, clinics and , patient education programs :-

I. URBAN HEALTH CENTRE (UHC)
The dept. has a Urban Health Centre, 3kms. away from CPR Hospital at Rajarampuri where MCH services including immunization, under fives clinic, F.P., ANC case, PNC care, home visits and surveys are carried out. Health education and referral services are provided to all beneficiaries. The population covered under UHC is 20351. Students are posted in UHC during IIIrd semester in batches of 35-40. One assistant professor is in charge of the center.

II. RURAL HEALTH TRAINING CENTRE (RHTC)
The dept. has a Rural Health Training Centre 11kms. away at Khupire (Tal. Karveer) where MCH services including immunization, under fives clinic, F.P., ANC case, PNC care, home visits and surveys are carried out. Health education and referral services are provided to all beneficiaries. The population covered under RHTC includes the village population of 8224 plus draining population of about 80000-1 lac of three neighboring PHCs . Students are posted in this field setting in IVth semester in batches of 35-40. One assistant professor is in charge of the center.

III. ARV OPD
ARV OPD is situated in CPR hospital and has an average daily OPD of 50-80 patients with dog bite. ARV and ARS are available to all patients.

d) Others:-
Transport facilities :-
2 student buses of 22 capacity are available for visits to the UHC, RHTC and other places of public health importance. Some of these places include:

  • Public Health Laboratory,
  • Rehabilitation Centers and Institutions for Blind, Lepers, Deaf & Mute,
  • Water treatment plant and sewage treatment plant,
  • Milk Dairy,
  • Slaughter house, etc.
Visit to our own CPR hospital and its various departments esp. Record section, Blood bank, ART centre, CSSD and Mortuary is also arranged for the students so that they become familiar with the hospital setup.

Department of Pathology has 5 major subsections, including Clinical pathology ( Haematology & clinical Pathology) , Cytopathology , Surgical Pathology , Autopsy Pathology & District Blood Bank.

The department is situated in two locations namely hospital & college complex. It runs daily emergency and out patients Clinical laboratory services and looks after central clinical laboratory of the hospital , full phased district blood bank with Apheresis facility and state reference laboratory. The department caters to clinical pathology, surgical pathology & autopsy investigative needs of hospital and provides blood and blood components. It undertakes education of undergraduate MBBS & BPMT students and runs post graduate courses like DMLT and also trains Medical Officers and Technicians from State Health Services. The Department Participates in research. It also participates and arranges various health camps, awareness programs and educational programs.

Mission of the department is to provide all necessary and up to date laboratory investigate support of clinical, surgical, cytopathological investigations. These helps clinician to rightly diagnose and manage the patients attending the hospital and various community programs, there by acting as a useful team member of clinical team. The department undertakes teaching of undergraduate students of II nd MBBS course for the subject of Pathology so as to make them understand causes, mechanism, morphological changes and clinical pathological co-relation. It also trains them to carry out basic haematological and clinical investigations and their interpretation. Thus the department participates in the process of making the student understand clinical medicine so that they can become first line basic doctors who can also effectively at as an active member of health care team. Department trains post graduate students of DMLT , who can act as effective paramedical force.

Department undertakes training of Medical Officers and Technician from state health services with special reference to laboratory & blood bank techniques that are not available in their own set up , so that they can establish basic laboratory and blood bank facilities at state health centers.
