Rajarshi Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Government Medical college is located at Dasara Chowk, Bhausingji Road, Kolhapur district, Maharashtra State, India. It was founded in the year 2000. The RCSM GMC is affiliated to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. The college is recognized by the Medical Council of India, New Delhi for medical Education in India.
The medical college provides training to about 600 students in undergraduate medical courses & about 90 students in post- graduate courses. Apart from MBBS courses, primary DNB as well as post diploma DNB course, DMLT, Ph.D. & Nursing courses are also provided in the institute. A nursing college is also run by the institute.
The CPR Hospital has 18 wards with a total of 665 beds and operates with the help of teaching staff viz. 12 Professors, 27 Associate professors & 57 Assistant professors, 434 nursing staff members & paramedics.
All admissions to the under graduate courses are administered centrally by the Directorate of Medical Education & Research (DMER), Mumbai. The Common Entrance test, called MHT-CET is conducted by DMER. 15 % of total seats are reserved for all India quota to be filled through all India premedical entrance test (AIPMT) conducted by the Director General of Health Services (DGHS) of Government of India.
The institute is mainly funded by Government of Maharashtra and render so many services, virtually free of cost, mostly to the under privileged sections of the society. The CPR hospital popularly known as "Thorala Davakhana" since inception and caters services to the people from neighboring districts viz. Sangli, Satara, Konkan area including Sindhudurga & Ratnagiri, south Karnataka including Belgaum district apart from Kolhapur district.
The first MBBS college building is situated in the outskirts of the city, in Shenda Park. Regular bus service for all students is provided by the institute at Shenda Park. There is a beautiful campus of around 40 acres, which is lush green in the monsoon. The campus has small lake popularly know as "Shenda Lake" which is close to the boy's hostel building. The campus has 5 Boy' s hostel buildings, large sports grounds (Football & cricket), a mess, a gym, Dean's Bungalow, and very spacious college buildings.
Chhatrapati Pramila Raje General Hospital is a large state-run hospital in Kolhapur, India with 650 beds. It is affiliated to the R.C.S.M. Government Medical College and a Nurses training School. Chhatrapati Pramila Raje General Hospital caters to approx. 8,426,959 population of Kolhapur District- an important district in the western Maharashtra.
The hospital was originally built in commemoration of the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1875 and was named king Albert Edward Hospital. The Foundation stone was laid by Sir. James Fergusson, then Governor of Bombay on 9 march 1877. This was possible with the blessings of the regional ruler Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. This project was completed in 1881. The hospital underwent many changes after Shahu Maharaj returned from England and offered free treatment to every one.
It is a matter of great pride for this hospital that "First lady doctor of India ...Dr.Anandibai Joshi after completing her challenging medical education from united states of America was appointed as 'Physician in charge' of the hospital by the regional ruler Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj !! "
In 1946, the hospital was renamed "Chhatrapati Pramila Raje Hospital (CPR)" in the honor of Chhatrapati Pramilatai Raje, daughter in law of the Royal family of Kolhapur.
In the year 2000, the hospital was officially affiliated to the newly established Rajarshee Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Government Medical College (RCSM GMC) & handed over to Medical Education Department in 2007 from department of Health services. The then Minister of Medical Education & Health Services, Hon. Shri. Digvijay Khanvilkar had major contribution in the establishment of Rajarshee Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Government Medical College (RCSM GMC) at Kolhapur.
Because of tremendous efforts by the then Minister of Medical Education & Health Services, Hon. Shri. Digvijay Khanvilkar, Cardio vascular & Thoracic Department (CVTS) was established in the campus of Chhatrapati Pramila Raje Hospital (CPR) for providing costly major facilities related to cardiothoracic ailments to this area of western Maharashtra. Eminent Cardio Thoracic surgeon Dr. Kolhe had given his best to render good quality services to the poor & underprivileged class of people in this area.
Dr. Chandrakant D.Shirole was appointed as first Dean of newly started Rajarshee Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj Government Medical College (RCSM GMC). Under his valuable guidance & consequent Dean, Dr. Mrs. Asha k. Pratinidhi the college started taking shape. With the valuable contribution from various faculties, the first batch of Medical College passed out in the year 2006 with flying colors!!
This Medical College has given an eminent Vice Chancellor Dr. Arun Jamkar to Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik. He was Dean of this medical college during year 2008-2009. He tried his best for development of this newly started government medical college.
Legendary singer from Kolhapur, 'Lata didi Mangeshkar' had contributed a lot during initial days of this college for establishment of Boy's Hostel at Shenda Park!
Kolhapur is the last district from southern part of state of Maharashtra. Western hilly boundaries of the district are adjacent to Konkan area, while southern boundaries touch neighboring district of Karnataka state. It is 100 km. away from Arabian Sea. It has average rainfall and a pleasant climate all though out the year. There are plenty of rivers running across the district; so this part of state hardly faces any draught situation. The district is well connected with rest of the world with air, rail, and roads. Population of Kolhapur city is approx 8 lakhs.
Kolhapur has rich cultural heritage. It is known as "Dakshin Kashi" on account of its deity "Mahalaxmi" or "Ambabai". The Ambabai temple was built by Chalukya King Karnadev in 634 AD. Kolhapur is famous for being a centre of art, education, industry & sports, particularly wrestling.
Kolhapur is also known for sugar cane industry. Economy of local people has been significantly influenced by big number of sugar cane factories in and around the district. The "Jaggery" produced in Kolhapur popularly known as "GUDH" is exported to many countries.
Roots of Indian film industry are seen in Kolhapur. Many film industry stalwarts had originated their film carrier from Kolhapur, to name few; V.Shantaram, Lata Mangeshkar, Ramesh Dev, Suresh Wadkar, etc.!!!
Many sports personalities also have origins in the Kolhapur viz. legendary cricketer batsman Bhausaheb Nimbalkar; Swimmer Virdhaval Khade; Shooters Tejaswini Sawant, Rahi Sarnobat. The first Olympic medal winner of our country ,Khashaba Jadhav is a pride of Kolhapur!
It is a seat of educational centre. "SHIVAJI UNIVERSITY" is located in the main city. There are 2 medical colleges, 5 other faculty medical colleges as well as 6 engineering colleges running in the district.
Tourism places in & around Kolhapur attract too many tourists from other parts of country as well as too many international tourists! Beautiful scenery of hill stations around Kolhapur like Amboli, Amba, and Mahabaleshwar is awesome. Mahalaxmi temple, Jyotiba Devasthan, Nrusinha wadi are holy places to visit in & nearby Kolhapur .Panhala, Vishalgadh, Pratapgadh, Sindhudurga Forts along with other heritage buildings like old & new palace of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, Town Hall, Khidrapur Mandir are the historical places of attraction. At "Dajipur Abhayaranya" we see lot of wild animals like Tigers, Bisons (Gavareda), deers, etc.as well as many attractive birds! "Khasbag Maidan" is a famous historical wrestling ground since the era of Shahu Maharaja. A recently created museum in "Kaneri Math "at Kaneri is a nice show of Rural Hindu culture!

Since its inception in 2000, this Medical College has progressed leaps & bounds over the last fifteen years. Over 1000 students have successfully completed their medical graduation and are serving the community and are working in reputed medical institutions, both in India and abroad.
